ARTIST STATEMENT

My mother died of cancer when I was three years old, provoking a survival-oriented curiosity around spirituality, world religions, and philosophies. As a portrait artist, my focus is to capture one’s inner life and the infinite mystery of an individual on his or her human journey.

Spirit Capture Oil Portraits are consequently my spiritual practices on canvas, literally prayers in paint. The sitter’s physical likeness surfaces in oil pigments in what one critic called, “loose, spontaneous, mid-century brushstrokes with vivacious, Fauvist color.” I additionally embed an intuitive letter into each oil painting commission. This letter echos the highest vision of my subject and honors his or her hopes and dreams.

I use gold leaf, henna designs, quotations, textiles, Reiki symbols, hieroglyphics, sea glass, recycled objects, beads, or metallic inks…whatever strikes the right chord and by using these various media, I invoke symbolism laden with vivacious, loving, and metaphysical contexts.

My interest in anthropology and adventure travel is always present and there are so many sacred values about color and form from which I constantly learn, including Zulu Medicine Visioning, Peruvian Shamanic Journeying, and Egyptian Hieroglyphic studies. I am a lifelong student and will always expand my spiritual understanding and visual vocabulary.

3%+ of sales are donated to philanthropic causes close to my heart.

I intend my Spirit Capture Portraits to honor the sitter’s inner essense and outer likeness. My painting is my prayer and the Spirit in me beholds the Spirit in you. Thank you for taking interest in my work.
